Arenigs

The Arenigs are a mountain range in Snowdonia, North Wales. They are less popular with tourists and walkers than other ranges in Snowdonia, such as the Glyderau or the Snowdon massif, offering a more remote and solitary experience.

The highest peak in the Arenigs is Arenig Fawr, reaching a height of 854 metres (2,799 ft). Other notable peaks include Arenig Fach and Moel Llyfnant. The range is characterised by its rugged terrain, with rocky slopes, grassy plateaus, and peat bogs.

Geologically, the Arenigs are composed primarily of Ordovician volcanic rocks.

The name "Arenig" is believed to be derived from the Welsh word "ar" (on/upon) and "enig" (slate), possibly referring to the slate-like formations found in the area.

The area around the Arenigs has a rich history, with evidence of prehistoric settlements and Roman activity. The landscape also bears the marks of more recent human activities, such as quarrying and sheep farming.

The Arenigs are a designated Site of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI) due to their important habitats and species, including various types of heathland, grassland, and woodland, as well as a range of bird species.
