Simojovel
Simojovel is a town and municipality located in the north of the Mexican state of Chiapas. It is part of the Chiapas Highlands region.
History:
The name "Simojovel" is derived from the Zoque language, meaning "place of the somaj, or the place where the somaj abounds." The somaj is a local fish. The area was originally inhabited by Zoque people. During the colonial period, it was an important agricultural center. In the 20th and 21st centuries, Simojovel has experienced social and political unrest, particularly related to issues of land ownership and resource control.
Geography:
Simojovel is situated in mountainous terrain, characteristic of the Chiapas Highlands. The climate is generally humid and subtropical.
Economy:
The primary economic activities in Simojovel are agriculture, particularly coffee cultivation, and livestock raising. Amber mining is also a significant, though often controversial, economic activity in the region.

The population of Simojovel is a mix of indigenous and mestizo peoples, and the local culture reflects this diversity. Traditional music, dance, and crafts are still practiced.
Politics:
Simojovel, like many municipalities in Chiapas, has experienced periods of political instability and social conflict, often linked to disputes over land, resources, and governance.
