Arthur Waugh (priest)
Arthur Waugh (28 August 1866 – 26 June 1943) was an English literary critic, publisher, and Anglican priest. He is best known as the father of the novelists Evelyn Waugh and Alec Waugh.
Waugh was educated at Sherborne School and New College, Oxford. After a brief period teaching, he entered the publishing world, eventually becoming managing director of Chapman and Hall. His literary criticism appeared in various publications, and he wrote a biography of Tennyson.
Ordained as a deacon in 1924 and a priest in 1925, Waugh served in the Church of England later in life, balancing his publishing career with his religious duties. His religious beliefs and traditionalist views significantly influenced his sons, particularly Evelyn. He is buried in the churchyard of St Peter's Church, Midsomer Norton, Somerset.
