Proxy (novel)
Proxy is a young adult dystopian science fiction novel written by Alex London, published in 2013. It is the first book in the Proxy series.
The story is set in a futuristic, stratified society where individuals known as "Patrons" live privileged lives and are legally shielded from the consequences of their actions. Conversely, "Proxies" are bound to Patrons and bear the legal punishment for any crimes the Patron commits, no matter how severe.
The narrative follows two main characters: Syd, a Proxy who has endured harsh punishments for his Patron, Knox, since childhood, and Knox himself, who is largely oblivious to the suffering Syd endures on his behalf. The seemingly unbreakable bond between Syd and Knox is tested when Knox commits a crime that carries the death penalty.
The novel explores themes of social inequality, sacrifice, the value of human life, and the corrupting influence of power. It examines the moral implications of a system where justice is unequally distributed and questions the nature of freedom and responsibility. The plot unfolds through a combination of action, suspense, and character development, revealing secrets about the society and the origins of the Proxy system. It also explores the beginnings of a rebellion against the established order.
