Ginger (Brockhampton album)
Ginger is the fifth studio album by American hip hop collective Brockhampton, released on August 23, 2019. It is their second album released following the departure of Ameer Vann in 2018. The album was largely recorded at Rick Rubin's Shangri-La Studios in Malibu, California.
The album's title, "Ginger," reflects a sense of vulnerability and the mellow, contemplative mood that permeates much of the music. It deals with themes of coping with grief, anxiety, and the complexities of newfound fame and success in the wake of internal strife.
Four singles preceded the album's release: "I Been Born Again," "If You Pray Right," "Boy Bye," and "No Role Modelz." The album features guest appearances from Deb Never, Ryan Beatty, and slowthai.
Upon release, Ginger received generally positive reviews from critics, who praised its introspective lyrics, cohesive sound, and emotional depth. It debuted at number 3 on the Billboard 200 chart in the United States, marking Brockhampton's fourth consecutive top 10 album.
The album was accompanied by a short film titled "Heaven Belongs to You", directed by Shia LaBeouf, which further explored the themes of the album through visual storytelling. Ginger represents a significant shift in Brockhampton's sound, showcasing a more mature and vulnerable side of the group.
