Minister of Health (Iraq)

The Minister of Health of Iraq is the government official responsible for overseeing the Ministry of Health, the principal body in Iraq charged with formulating and implementing national health policy. The Minister is a member of the Council of Ministers (the Iraqi cabinet) and is nominated by the Prime Minister of Iraq, subject to approval by the Council of Representatives (the Iraqi parliament).

The responsibilities of the Minister include:

  • Developing and implementing public health programs and initiatives.
  • Managing the national healthcare system, including hospitals, clinics, and other medical facilities.
  • Overseeing the training and regulation of healthcare professionals.
  • Procuring and distributing essential medicines and medical supplies.
  • Working with international organizations and other countries on health-related issues.
  • Addressing public health emergencies and outbreaks.

The position is typically filled by a medical professional or someone with experience in public health administration, although this is not a strict requirement. Due to the political landscape of Iraq, the selection of the Minister of Health often reflects the need for sectarian or ethnic balance within the government. The Ministry and the Minister have faced numerous challenges, including corruption, inadequate funding, and the impact of conflict on the health infrastructure and services.
