Klaatu (band)
Klaatu was a Canadian progressive rock band formed in 1973 in Toronto, Ontario. The band is known for its studio albums, particularly their debut, 3:47 EST, which garnered significant attention and controversy due to speculation that they were secretly The Beatles recording under a pseudonym. This rumor was fueled by the album's complex arrangements, melodic similarities to Beatles music, and the band's initial refusal to release publicity photos or biographical information.
The band consisted of Dee Long, John Woloschuk, and Terry Draper. Although initially a trio, additional musicians contributed to their recordings and live performances throughout their career.
Klaatu's music is characterized by its intricate instrumentation, lush vocal harmonies, and science fiction themes. They explored a diverse range of musical styles, incorporating elements of progressive rock, pop, and orchestral music.
Following the initial "Beatles" speculation, the band enjoyed a period of commercial success and critical acclaim. They released several albums, including Hope (1977), Sir Army Suit (1978), Endangered Species (1980), and Magentalane (1981). While their subsequent albums did not achieve the same level of notoriety as their debut, they continued to showcase the band's musical talent and songwriting abilities.
Klaatu disbanded in the early 1980s. The members pursued individual projects in music and other fields. Despite their relatively short lifespan, Klaatu left a lasting legacy as a unique and influential progressive rock band, remembered both for their music and the enduring mystery surrounding their early anonymity.
