LocalLink 21 (BaltimoreLink)
LocalLink 21, more commonly known as BaltimoreLink, is a comprehensive bus network redesign implemented by the Maryland Department of Transportation Maryland Transit Administration (MDOT MTA) in Baltimore, Maryland. Launched in June 2017, BaltimoreLink aimed to improve the efficiency and reliability of the city's bus system by consolidating routes, creating high-frequency corridors, and integrating the bus network with the existing Metro SubwayLink, Light RailLink, and MARC Train services.
The redesign introduced a color-coded system of bus lines, designed to make navigation easier for riders. The primary network consists of 12 high-frequency "CityLink" routes operating every 10-15 minutes during peak hours. In addition to the CityLink routes, the system includes "LocalLink" routes, which provide more localized service to neighborhoods throughout the city and surrounding counties. Supplemental services include express routes and weekend-only routes.
A key component of BaltimoreLink was the construction of dedicated bus lanes and improved bus stops along key corridors, intended to reduce traffic congestion and improve bus travel times. The implementation of BaltimoreLink was accompanied by significant outreach efforts to inform the public about the new routes and schedules. While the system aimed to modernize and improve public transportation in Baltimore, its implementation faced challenges related to route adjustments, service reliability, and rider adaptation to the new network.
