Missile technician (United States Navy)

A Missile Technician (MT) in the United States Navy is a highly skilled enlisted sailor responsible for the maintenance, repair, and operational readiness of sophisticated missile and weapons systems aboard naval vessels, primarily submarines and surface combatants equipped with vertical launch systems (VLS). This includes the Tomahawk Land Attack Missile (TLAM), Standard Missile (SM), and other advanced weaponry.

MTs perform a wide range of duties encompassing both mechanical and electronic aspects of missile systems. Their responsibilities include:

• Preventive Maintenance: Conducting scheduled inspections, tests, and upkeep to ensure optimal system performance and prevent equipment failures.

• Corrective Maintenance: Troubleshooting and repairing malfunctioning components, including electronic circuitry, hydraulic systems, and mechanical assemblies. This often involves using specialized diagnostic equipment and technical manuals.

• System Testing: Performing functional checks and simulations to verify system functionality and identify potential issues prior to operational use.

• Alignment and Calibration: Precisely aligning and calibrating missile systems to ensure accuracy and proper launch trajectory.

• Handling and Storage: Safely handling, storing, and transporting missiles and related components according to strict safety protocols and regulations.

• Inventory Management: Maintaining accurate records of missile inventory, parts, and equipment.

• Technical Documentation: Reading, interpreting, and utilizing technical manuals, schematics, and diagrams to perform maintenance and repair tasks.

• Training: Providing training and guidance to junior personnel on missile system operation and maintenance procedures.

Becoming a Missile Technician requires completing specialized training at Naval technical schools. The curriculum covers electronics, hydraulics, mechanics, and missile systems theory. Advancement in the MT rating requires demonstrated proficiency in technical skills, leadership abilities, and a thorough understanding of naval operations. Due to the sensitive nature of the work, MTs typically require a security clearance. The job demands precision, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
