Kei Lun

Kei Lun (麒麟) is the Cantonese romanization of the Chinese term qilin (麒麟), a mythical hooved chimerical creature known throughout various East Asian cultures. Often referred to in English as the "Chinese unicorn," the qilin is more complex than a simple unicorn counterpart.

In Chinese mythology and folklore, the qilin is considered one of the four noble animals, alongside the dragon, phoenix, and tortoise. It is a symbol of good omen, prosperity, benevolence, and longevity. Its appearance is said to herald the arrival or passing of a sage or an illustrious ruler.

The appearance of the qilin varies across artistic depictions, but it is typically described as having the body of a deer, the head of a dragon, the scales of a fish, the hooves of an ox, and a single horn (though hornless versions also exist). Its fur is often depicted in vibrant colors, such as red, yellow, and blue.

The qilin is often associated with purity and gentleness. It is said to avoid harming living creatures and only consumes vegetation. This gentle nature further reinforces its role as a symbol of benevolence and righteous rule.

The term Kei Lun (or qilin) also occasionally appears as a surname. Furthermore, it can be found in place names and names of businesses throughout Cantonese-speaking regions.
