Lamprus (mythology)

In Greek mythology, Lamprus (Λάμπρος) is a relatively obscure figure whose story is primarily associated with Crete. He is typically described as a Cretan farmer or shepherd. His myth revolves around his wife, Galatea, and the circumstances of their child's birth and subsequent fate.

The myth states that Lamprus, driven by poverty or perhaps a vow, commanded his wife, Galatea, to expose (abandon) their newborn daughter should she give birth to a girl. Galatea, against her husband's wishes, hid the infant and raised her as a boy, naming her Leucippus (Λεύκιππος), meaning "white horse."

As Leucippus grew older, Galatea feared Lamprus would discover the deception. She prayed to Leto, the mother of Artemis and Apollo, for help. Leto heard her prayers and transformed Leucippus into a girl.

The story of Lamprus and his family is primarily known through Antoninus Liberalis' Metamorphoses, which preserves various mythological tales. The myth highlights themes of parental choice, poverty, divine intervention, and gender identity. The transformation of Leucippus is seen as an act of divine mercy and a testament to a mother's love and resourcefulness.
