Lam Tsuen
Lam Tsuen is a village area located in the Tai Po District of Hong Kong's New Territories. It is most well-known for the Lam Tsuen Wishing Trees, two banyan trees located near the Tin Hau Temple in Fong Ma Po Village. The Wishing Trees have historically been a popular site for local villagers and tourists to make wishes during Lunar New Year. Traditionally, wishes were written on joss paper tied to an orange, and then thrown onto the branches of the trees. If the paper successfully hung on a branch, it was believed the wish would come true.
Due to the weight of the offerings and the potential damage to the trees, the practice of throwing wishes onto the original Wishing Trees was banned. Now, wooden racks are provided nearby where visitors can hang their wishes.
Besides the Wishing Trees, Lam Tsuen is also a collection of traditional Hakka villages. The area offers a glimpse into rural life in Hong Kong and features traditional village houses and agricultural land. Various local festivals and cultural events are held in Lam Tsuen throughout the year, attracting visitors interested in experiencing traditional Hong Kong culture.
