John Burgess (priest)
John Burgess (born November 17, 1930, deceased March 13, 2007) was a British Anglican priest and theologian. He served in various roles within the Church of England, most notably as Principal of Westcott House, Cambridge, from 1980 to 1989.
Burgess was educated at Sherborne School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he read Greats (Classics). After Oxford, he trained for ordination at Westcott House. He was ordained deacon in 1956 and priest in 1957.
His early ministry was spent in parish work, including curacies in the Diocese of Chester. He later held academic posts, including lecturing at the University of Exeter. He was appointed Principal of Westcott House in 1980, succeeding Canon Michael Winton.
As Principal of Westcott House, Burgess oversaw a period of significant change and development within the theological college. He was known for his commitment to theological education and his pastoral care for students. He also played an active role in the wider University of Cambridge community.
Following his retirement from Westcott House in 1989, Burgess continued to be involved in theological reflection and writing. He published several books and articles on theological topics. He was also an honorary canon of Ely Cathedral. His theological interests included systematic theology, the doctrine of the Trinity, and the relationship between theology and spirituality. He is remembered as a respected theologian, pastor, and educator.
