Das Boot (2018 TV series)

Das Boot (2018 TV series) is a German television series that serves as a sequel to Wolfgang Petersen's acclaimed 1981 film Das Boot, and is based on Lothar-Günther Buchheim's novels Das Boot and Die Festung.

The series, developed by Johannes W. Betz and Tony Saint, picks up the story nine months after the events depicted in the film, focusing on both the German U-boat warfare in the Atlantic and the French Resistance in La Rochelle, France. The narrative splits into two interwoven storylines: one following the crew of U-612 as they embark on their first mission from La Rochelle, and the other focusing on Simone Strasser, a German translator in La Rochelle, who becomes embroiled in the Resistance.

The first season premiered in November 2018. Subsequent seasons have continued to explore the human cost of war from both the perspective of the German submariners and those fighting against them on land. The series aims to offer a more nuanced and complex portrayal of World War II, exploring the moral ambiguities and psychological toll faced by individuals on all sides of the conflict. Unlike the film, which largely focused on the claustrophobic environment of the U-boat, the series expands its scope to depict the broader geopolitical landscape of wartime Europe.
