Lalish

Lalish (also spelled Laliş or Lalesh) is a small mountain valley located in the Shekhan District of Duhok Governorate in Iraqi Kurdistan. It is the holiest temple and pilgrimage site of the Yazidi religion. Every Yazidi is expected to make at least one six-day pilgrimage to Lalish during their lifetime.

The valley is home to the tomb of Sheikh Adi ibn Musafir, a central figure in the Yazidi faith. Lalish is believed to be a sacred place where God revealed himself. Pilgrims engage in rituals such as circumambulating the tomb of Sheikh Adi, kissing sacred stones, and dipping themselves in the sacred Zamzam spring.

Lalish has a complex architecture comprising several shrines, courtyards, and ceremonial areas. The conical domes characteristic of Yazidi architecture are a prominent feature of the site. The valley is also dotted with sacred trees and springs.

The upkeep and administration of Lalish are managed by a dedicated council of Yazidi religious leaders. The site is revered by Yazidis worldwide and considered essential to their religious identity and cultural heritage. The valley faces ongoing challenges, including the need to protect it from environmental degradation and security threats.
