Karstarma

Karstarma is a genus of small, semi-terrestrial crabs belonging to the family Sesarmidae. These crabs are primarily found in the Indo-West Pacific region, typically inhabiting mangrove forests and brackish water environments.

Karstarma crabs are characterized by their relatively small size, often reaching a carapace width of only a few centimeters. They exhibit a square-shaped carapace and possess well-developed chelipeds (claws). Their coloration can vary, often featuring mottled patterns that provide camouflage within their natural habitat.

These crabs are primarily detritivores, feeding on decaying organic matter and algae found within the mangrove ecosystem. They play a significant role in nutrient cycling and decomposition within these environments.

Karstarma species are known to be relatively adaptable to varying salinity levels, allowing them to thrive in the dynamic conditions of mangrove ecosystems. They are often observed burrowing into the mud and roots of mangrove trees, providing them with shelter and protection from predators.

While not typically considered a commercially exploited species, Karstarma crabs contribute to the overall biodiversity and ecological health of mangrove habitats. Further research is ongoing to fully understand the distribution, life cycle, and ecological role of different Karstarma species.
