Yenisey

The Yenisey River (also spelled Yenisei or Jenisej) is a major river in Siberia, Russia. It is one of the longest river systems in the world, flowing northward into the Kara Sea, a part of the Arctic Ocean. Considered the central of the three great Siberian rivers that flow into the Arctic (the others being the Ob and the Lena), it forms the Ienissei-Angara river system, often ranked as the fifth longest river in the world.

The Yenisey originates in Mongolia and traverses much of central Siberia. Its drainage basin encompasses a wide range of landscapes, from mountainous regions to vast taiga forests and tundra. The river plays a crucial role in the regional ecosystem, supporting diverse flora and fauna, and historically serving as a vital transportation route.

The river is divided into several sections, each with its own characteristics. The Upper Yenisey (Ulug-Khem) begins in Mongolia and flows into Russia. The Lower Yenisey is a wide, slow-flowing section that empties into the Kara Sea. Major tributaries include the Angara River, which drains Lake Baikal, and the Stony Tunguska (Podkamennaya Tunguska).

The Yenisey River has been utilized for hydroelectric power generation, with several large dams constructed along its course, most notably the Sayano-Shushenskaya Dam, one of the largest dams in the world. These dams have significant impacts on the river's flow regime and ecosystem.

The river and its surrounding region are home to various indigenous peoples, including the Ket, the Selkup, and the Evenki. These groups have historically relied on the river for sustenance and transportation.

Pollution, particularly from industrial activities, poses a significant threat to the Yenisey River's water quality and ecosystem.
