Jovan Popović (painter)
Jovan Popović (1910 – 1981) was a Serbian painter and academic. He is considered a significant figure in Serbian modern art, particularly known for his abstract expressionist works.
Popović studied at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, graduating in 1936. He initially worked in a representational style, focusing on landscapes and portraits. However, after World War II, his style evolved towards abstraction. He experimented with various techniques and materials, often incorporating elements of collage and assemblage into his paintings.
Popović's work is characterized by its dynamic compositions, bold use of color, and expressive brushstrokes. He sought to capture the essence of movement and emotion through non-figurative forms. His paintings often evoke a sense of energy and vitality.
He exhibited widely throughout his career, both in Serbia and internationally. His works are held in numerous public and private collections, including the National Museum of Serbia in Belgrade and the Museum of Contemporary Art in Belgrade.
In addition to his artistic practice, Popović was also a professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Belgrade, where he mentored generations of young artists. He played a key role in shaping the development of Serbian art in the post-war era. His influence extends beyond his own artistic output through his contributions as an educator.
