Jorma (album)
Jorma is the debut solo album by Jorma Kaukonen, guitarist for Jefferson Airplane and Hot Tuna. It was released in 1969 on RCA Records. The album is primarily acoustic and showcases Kaukonen's fingerpicking style, heavily influenced by blues and folk music.
The album features both original compositions and interpretations of traditional blues and folk songs. Some notable tracks include "The Ballad of You and Me and Pooneil," a reimagining of the Jefferson Airplane song, and "Third Week in Chelsea," an original instrumental. Other cover songs include takes on tunes by Reverend Gary Davis, such as "I Am the Light of This World."
Jorma is often considered a classic of the late 1960s acoustic guitar scene, highlighting Kaukonen's instrumental prowess and showcasing a different side of his musical personality than his work with Jefferson Airplane. It is seen as an important bridge between his electric and acoustic work and a precursor to the Hot Tuna sound. The album's stripped-down production and focus on instrumental performance have contributed to its enduring appeal among guitar enthusiasts.
