Foster also won a silver medal at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles. He was known for his powerful start and aggressive hurdling technique. He held the American record in the 50-meter hurdles for many years.

Throughout his career, Foster faced competition from other prominent hurdlers, including Renaldo Nehemiah and Roger Kingdom. He was inducted into the USA Track & Field Hall of Fame in 2002.
