John Smillie (mathematician)

John Smillie is an American mathematician specializing in dynamical systems, Teichmüller theory, and hyperbolic geometry. He is currently a professor of mathematics at the University of Warwick.

Smillie earned his Ph.D. from the University of Chicago in 1977, under the supervision of Ralph Tindell. His research has made significant contributions to the understanding of rational billiards, interval exchange transformations, and the dynamics of complex polynomials.

He is known for his work with Curtis T. McMullen on complex dynamics and holomorphic motions, and with Artur Avila and Giovanni Forni on the regularity of Lyapunov exponents for certain dynamical systems. Smillie has also made significant contributions to the understanding of the topology and geometry of Teichmüller space.

Smillie has received numerous awards and honors for his work, including a Guggenheim Fellowship. He has lectured extensively around the world and is a highly respected figure in the mathematical community.
