John Rand (actor)

John Rand (1871 – 1940), born as John Donovan, was an American actor, primarily known for his work in silent films, particularly those of Charlie Chaplin. He appeared in over 50 films between 1916 and 1940.

Rand frequently played character roles, often as a bartender, waiter, or policeman. His association with Chaplin began with The Vagabond (1916) and continued through The Circus (1928). Some of his other notable appearances in Chaplin films include Easy Street (1917), The Immigrant (1917), and The Kid (1921). While he did not receive prominent billing, his contributions helped to populate and enrich the world of Chaplin's films, lending authenticity and humor to the background scenery. He was known for his expressive face and ability to convey character with minimal screen time. He continued to work in film after the transition to sound, though his roles became smaller. His final film appearance was in Chaplin's The Great Dictator (1940), released the year of his death.
