Izúcar de Matamoros (municipality)

Izúcar de Matamoros is a municipality located in the southwestern part of the Mexican state of Puebla. It is the seat of the Izúcar de Matamoros district and lies in the Mixteca Poblana region.

Geography: The municipality's terrain is varied, encompassing plains, hills, and mountains. The climate ranges from temperate to semi-arid, depending on the altitude. The main river running through the area is the Atoyac River, also known locally as the Nexapa River.

History: Pre-Hispanic inhabitants of the region included Popoloca and Mixtec peoples. During the colonial period, it became an important agricultural center. The "de Matamoros" part of the name honors Mariano Matamoros, a hero of the Mexican War of Independence.
