Interstate 180 (Pennsylvania)
Interstate 180 (I-180) is a short auxiliary Interstate Highway in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania. It acts as a spur from I-80, providing access to the city of Williamsport and the Susquehanna Valley. It runs for approximately 29 miles (47 km) entirely within Lycoming County. The highway is mostly a four-lane freeway.
Route Description
I-180 begins at an interchange with I-80 near Milton. From there, it heads north, crossing the West Branch Susquehanna River. It continues north through rural areas before entering the Williamsport metropolitan area. The route provides access to Williamsport via several interchanges, including connections to U.S. Route 15 (US 15). The northern terminus of I-180 is at an interchange with US 15 just north of Williamsport.
History
The section of I-180 between I-80 and US 15 near Williamsport was originally designated as part of US 220. In the late 1960s, plans were made to construct a freeway bypass of Williamsport. This freeway was eventually designated as I-180. The highway was completed and designated as I-180 in the late 1970s. The US 220 designation was moved onto the freeway concurrently with I-180. US 220 remains concurrent with I-180 for the entire length of the Interstate.
