Tauriana (Greece)

Tauriana was an ancient city located in Epirus, in northwestern Greece. Its precise location is debated, but it is generally believed to have been situated near the modern village of Graikochori, close to the Acheron River.

Historically, Tauriana was a settlement of the Thesprotians, one of the major Greek tribes of Epirus. Its importance stemmed from its strategic position controlling access to the interior of Epirus. It likely played a role in the conflicts between the Epirote tribes and, later, the Roman Republic.

While not as prominent as some other ancient Epirote cities like Nicopolis or Butrint, Tauriana is mentioned in historical sources and archaeological evidence suggests it was a fortified settlement. Remains of walls and other structures have been identified in the area attributed to the ancient city, offering insight into its urban layout and defensive capabilities.

The city’s history is intertwined with the broader history of Epirus, a region known for its independent spirit and its eventual integration into the Roman Empire. Following the Roman conquest, Tauriana likely continued as a local center, although its status and importance likely diminished.

The exploration of Tauriana’s archaeological site continues to contribute to our understanding of ancient Epirus, particularly the lives and culture of the Thesprotian people. Further investigation may shed more light on the city's role in regional politics and its eventual decline.
