Lewis Burwell (Upper Canada)

Lewis Burwell (1778-1862) was a prominent surveyor, land owner, and political figure in Upper Canada (later Ontario). He played a significant role in the development and settlement of the southwestern portion of the province, particularly in the Talbot Settlement.

Burwell was born in Fauquier County, Virginia. He arrived in Upper Canada around 1800, having been recruited by Colonel Thomas Talbot, the superintendent of the Talbot Settlement, to assist with surveying and land allocation.

His work as a surveyor was crucial to the establishment of the Talbot Settlement. He surveyed vast tracts of land, laying out townships and concession lines, and was responsible for the allocation of land to settlers. His accurate surveys and efficient land management helped to attract settlers to the region and facilitated its economic growth.

Beyond his surveying work, Burwell also served as a Justice of the Peace and held various political positions. He represented Middlesex County in the Legislative Assembly of Upper Canada for several terms, beginning in 1812. In the Assembly, he advocated for the interests of his constituents and supported measures that promoted agricultural development and infrastructure improvements.

Burwell was also actively involved in the War of 1812, serving as a militia officer. After the war, he continued his work as a surveyor and land agent, and remained a significant figure in the local community until his death. He is remembered for his contributions to the development of southwestern Ontario and his commitment to public service.
