Holderness (borough)

Holderness was a non-metropolitan district with borough status in the East Riding of Yorkshire, England, from 1974 to 1996. It was formed under the Local Government Act 1972, through a merger of the urban district of Withernsea, and the rural districts of Holderness and Hedon.

The borough was named after the historic region of Holderness, a low-lying area of the East Riding bounded to the north and east by the North Sea, to the south by the Humber Estuary, and to the west by the River Hull.

The administrative headquarters of Holderness borough were located in Hedon. Other significant settlements within the borough included Withernsea, Hornsea, and Patrington.

The primary industries in the Holderness area were agriculture, fishing, and tourism. The coastal areas were popular with holidaymakers, particularly during the summer months.

In 1996, as part of local government reorganisation, the borough of Holderness was abolished. Its area was absorbed into the newly created unitary authority of the East Riding of Yorkshire.
