Hobo Day
Hobo Day is the annual homecoming celebration at South Dakota State University (SDSU) in Brookings, South Dakota. Held each fall, typically in October, it is a significant event in the university's and the state's culture, known for its distinctive traditions and large crowds.
The central figure of Hobo Day is the "Hobo," a fictional character embodying the spirit of resourcefulness, resilience, and adventure. Students dress as hobos, often sporting patched clothing, face paint, and carrying bindles (bundles carried on a stick). The Hobo persona is meant to be a lighthearted and respectful representation, not a caricature of individuals experiencing homelessness.
The day's festivities typically include:
- The Hobo Day Parade: This is the largest parade in South Dakota, featuring elaborate floats constructed by student organizations, marching bands (including the Pride of the Dakotas), and community groups. The floats often depict themes related to SDSU, South Dakota, and current events.
- The Bum Olympics: A series of quirky and often messy games and competitions among student groups, held on the campus green.
- The Hobo Day Game: The SDSU Jackrabbits football team plays a home game, drawing a large and enthusiastic crowd.
- Campus Decorations: The SDSU campus is extensively decorated in yellow and blue, the university's colors.
- Button Sales: Commemorative Hobo Day buttons are sold, with proceeds often benefiting student organizations or university programs.
Hobo Day has a long and rich history, dating back to 1912. The celebration has evolved over the years, but its core traditions and spirit of school pride have remained constant. It is considered a major event for alumni to return to campus and reconnect with their alma mater.
The term "Hobo" and the imagery associated with it have occasionally been subject to scrutiny and debate. While the intention is to celebrate resourcefulness and adventure, awareness of the sensitivities surrounding homelessness is an ongoing consideration within the SDSU community. The university actively promotes respect and understanding in the context of Hobo Day.
