Mammacyon

Mammacyon is an extinct genus of amphicyonid ("bear-dog") that lived in North America during the Oligocene epoch, approximately 33.9 to 24.8 million years ago (Arikareean age). Amphicyonids were a diverse group of carnivorous mammals related to both dogs and bears.

Mammacyon species were relatively small compared to later amphicyonids. Fossil evidence suggests a body mass ranging from approximately 10 to 30 kilograms. Their dentition indicates a carnivorous diet, likely consisting of small to medium-sized prey.

The known fossil remains of Mammacyon have been found in various locations throughout North America, providing valuable insights into the evolution and distribution of early amphicyonids on the continent. The genus contributes to our understanding of the ecological roles and faunal composition of the Oligocene period. Further research on recovered specimens continues to refine the taxonomic relationships within the Amphicyonidae family.
