The Raid (2011 film)

The Raid, also known as The Raid: Redemption in the United States, is a 2011 Indonesian martial arts action film written, directed, and edited by Gareth Evans. It stars Iko Uwais as Rama, a member of a 20-man special forces team tasked with infiltrating a decrepit apartment block in Jakarta controlled by a ruthless drug lord named Tama Riyadi.

The film is renowned for its brutal and intricate fight choreography, featuring Pencak Silat, an Indonesian martial art. The narrative centers on the team's progressively desperate struggle for survival as they are trapped within the building and forced to fight their way through waves of criminals and Tama's henchmen.

The Raid gained significant international recognition and critical acclaim upon its release, praised for its relentless action, innovative fight sequences, and minimalist plot. It helped to popularize Indonesian cinema and martial arts films globally. The film's success led to a sequel, The Raid 2, released in 2014, which expanded upon the story and scale of the original. A planned American remake has been in development for several years, but as of late 2023, it has not been released.
