Admiral Duncan (pub)

The Admiral Duncan is a gay pub located in Soho, London. Situated on Old Compton Street, it is one of the oldest and most well-known LGBTQ+ venues in the area, playing a significant role in Soho's gay scene for decades.

The pub has a long and complex history, having served as a public house under various names since the 1830s. Its association with the gay community solidified in the latter half of the 20th century.

Tragically, the Admiral Duncan was the target of a nail bombing on April 30, 1999. Neo-Nazi David Copeland detonated a bomb inside the pub, resulting in three deaths and numerous injuries. The bombing is considered a hate crime and a stark reminder of the prejudice and violence faced by the LGBTQ+ community.

Following the attack, the Admiral Duncan was rebuilt and reopened. It serves as a symbol of resilience and solidarity for the LGBTQ+ community, standing as a place of remembrance, community, and celebration. The pub remains a popular destination and continues to be an important part of Soho's vibrant gay scene.
