Höllental Railway (Lower Austria)
The Höllental Railway (German: Höllentalbahn) is a narrow-gauge railway in Lower Austria. It runs from Payerbach-Reichenau, a station on the Southern Railway, through the scenic Höllental ("Hell Valley") to Hirschwang an der Rax. The primary purpose of the railway was and still is to transport timber and to serve the local tourism industry.
The railway is notable for its use of electric locomotives from a very early stage in its history, commencing electric operations in 1926. It operates on a gauge of 760 mm (2 ft 5 7⁄8 in), commonly known as Bosnian gauge. The line is owned and operated by the Niederösterreichische Verkehrsorganisationsgesellschaft (NÖVOG).
The Höllental Railway's route follows the Schwarza river through the narrow Höllental valley, offering passengers views of the Rax mountain range. The line features several tunnels and bridges due to the challenging terrain. The railway connects to the Rax cable car in Hirschwang, providing access to the mountain's hiking trails and recreation areas.
