Harry Norris (conductor)

Harry Norris (1902 – 1977) was a British conductor known primarily for his performances and recordings of British light music.

Norris began his career playing the cello and then served as a military bandmaster. His conducting career gained prominence in the post-World War II era. He was particularly associated with the lighter repertoire of British composers like Eric Coates, Albert Ketèlbey, Haydn Wood, and Ronald Binge. He conducted extensively for radio broadcasts, particularly for the BBC Light Programme, and was a regular guest conductor with various British orchestras, including the BBC Concert Orchestra.

Norris made numerous recordings, many of which have been reissued on CD. These recordings are valuable documents of the British light music tradition. His conducting style was generally characterized as straightforward and rhythmically precise, bringing out the charm and melodic appeal of the works he performed.
