Coogan's
Coogan's was a tavern and pharmacy located in the Washington Heights neighborhood of Manhattan, New York City. Situated at 4015 Broadway, at the corner of 168th Street, it was a popular gathering place for medical professionals, particularly those affiliated with nearby NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital and Columbia University Medical Center, as well as local residents and sports enthusiasts.
Coogan's was known for its Irish pub atmosphere, comfort food, and its strong connection to the local community. It served as a venue for celebrations, casual meals, and discussions, fostering a sense of camaraderie among its diverse clientele. The establishment's name originated from James J. Coogan, a former Manhattan borough president who once owned the land on which the building stood.
For many years, Coogan's was considered a neighborhood institution and a cultural landmark in Washington Heights. In March 2020, the restaurant closed due to a dispute over rent during the COVID-19 pandemic. The closure was met with widespread disappointment and efforts were made to find a new location. A temporary pop-up version of Coogan’s briefly operated in 2021.
