Usangi

Usangi is a region located in the Pare Mountains of northeastern Tanzania. It comprises two main areas: North Usangi and South Usangi, both traditionally inhabited by the Asu people, also known as the Pare people. The region is characterized by its fertile volcanic soil and its importance in agricultural production, particularly coffee, bananas, and vegetables.

Historically, Usangi was an independent kingdom ruled by chiefs (Mfumwa). These chiefdoms played a significant role in pre-colonial Tanzania. The arrival of European colonial powers, particularly the Germans, brought about significant changes to the socio-political structure of Usangi.

The Asu language, also known as Kipare, is spoken throughout Usangi. Traditional cultural practices, including dances, music, and rituals, are still practiced in the region, though they have been influenced by modernization and globalization. The majority of the population are Christians, with a significant minority adhering to traditional beliefs.

Usangi is also known for its scenic beauty, attracting a small but growing number of tourists interested in hiking, cultural tourism, and experiencing the natural environment of the Pare Mountains.
