Steward of the Realm (Denmark)

The Steward of the Realm (Danish: Rigsforstander) is a temporary or provisional head of state in Denmark. The position is activated when the monarch is either incapacitated, absent without designating an heir, or when there is a vacancy on the throne before a successor has been determined. The Steward exercises the powers of the monarch until the monarch is able to resume their duties, an heir is designated, or a new monarch is crowned.

The role and responsibilities of the Steward of the Realm are defined in the Danish Constitution. Typically, the role is filled by the Crown Prince or Crown Princess, if of age, followed by other adult members of the Royal Family deemed suitable and capable. In the absence of a royal heir of age and suitable, the task usually falls to a cabinet minister or a council composed of senior government officials.

The Steward of the Realm is not a regent in the traditional sense, as a regent is typically appointed by the monarch or by law to serve during the monarch's minority or long-term incapacity. The Steward's function is strictly temporary and arises from unforeseen circumstances requiring immediate leadership. The duration of a Steward's tenure is determined by the specific situation giving rise to the need for a Steward. The Steward must adhere to the established laws and customs of Denmark and uphold the constitution during their time in the role.
