Crank (novel)
Crank is a young adult novel written by Ellen Hopkins, published in 2004. It is written in free verse and follows the experiences of Kristina Snow, a bright, straight-laced teenager who becomes addicted to crystal methamphetamine (referred to as "crank" in the novel) during a summer visit with her estranged father.
The novel explores themes of addiction, identity, family dysfunction, sexual abuse, and the challenges faced by teenagers. It depicts Kristina's transformation from a good girl into Bree, her drug-fueled alter ego, and the devastating consequences of her addiction on herself and her relationships.
Crank is known for its raw and unflinching portrayal of drug abuse and its impact on individuals and families. It is the first book in the Crank series, which follows Kristina/Bree's journey through addiction and recovery. The subsequent books in the series include Glass (2007), Fallout (2010), Impulse (2007), and Perfect (2011). These books often explore the perspectives of other characters related to Kristina, such as her cousins and children, further examining the ripple effects of addiction and trauma across generations.
