Hypargos (bird)

The genus Hypargos comprises two species of small, brightly colored estrildid finches found in sub-Saharan Africa. These birds are often referred to as "twinspots" due to the distinctive white spots on their plumage.

Hypargos species are typically found in dense undergrowth, forest edges, and thickets, preferring areas with ample cover. Their diet consists primarily of small seeds, supplemented with insects, particularly during the breeding season.

The two recognized species within the Hypargos genus are:

  • Hypargos niveoguttatus (Peters, 1868) - Red-throated Twinspot
  • Hypargos margaritatus (Strickland, 1844) - Pink-throated Twinspot

Both species exhibit sexual dimorphism, with males typically displaying brighter and more extensive red or pink coloration on the throat and breast compared to the females. Their conservation status varies, and ongoing habitat loss and fragmentation pose a threat to their populations in some regions. They are popular in aviculture, but their specific needs for care require knowledgeable keepers.
