James Scott (antiquarian)

James Scott (antiquarian) (c. 1733 – 1813) was an English clergyman and antiquarian. He served as vicar of Itchen Stoke, Hampshire for many years. While not a nationally renowned figure, Scott is primarily remembered for his work relating to the history and antiquities of the town of Basingstoke and its surrounding areas. He dedicated a considerable portion of his life to researching and documenting local historical records, monuments, and traditions.

Scott's most notable contribution is considered to be his manuscript collection of historical notes and genealogical research pertaining to Hampshire, particularly the Basingstoke region. This collection, though not published in his lifetime, served as a valuable resource for later historians and researchers. His work provided insights into the social, economic, and religious life of the area during previous centuries. Details of his life are somewhat scarce, and his reputation rests primarily on the preservation of local historical data.
