USS Boise

The USS Boise has been the name of two ships in the United States Navy, both named after the city of Boise, Idaho.

  • USS Boise (CL-47) was a Brooklyn-class light cruiser that served during World War II. She was commissioned in 1938 and saw extensive action in the Pacific Theater, participating in numerous battles including Guadalcanal, Cape Esperance, and Leyte Gulf. The Boise was known for her resilience and the bravery of her crew, earning eleven battle stars for her wartime service. She was decommissioned in 1946 and sold to Argentina in 1951, where she was renamed ARA Nueve de Julio and served until 1978.

  • USS Boise (SSN-764) is a Los Angeles-class nuclear-powered fast attack submarine. She was commissioned in 1992 and remains in active service as of 2023. The Boise is designed for a variety of missions, including anti-submarine warfare, anti-surface warfare, intelligence gathering, and special operations support. The submarine has undergone numerous deployments and modernizations throughout her service life.
