Zheng Zhi

Zheng Zhi (simplified Chinese: 郑智; traditional Chinese: 鄭智; pinyin: Zhèng Zhì; born August 20, 1980) is a Chinese former professional footballer who primarily played as a central midfielder, but was also capable of playing as a defender. He is considered one of the most accomplished and respected footballers in Chinese football history.

Zheng began his professional career with Shenzhen Jianlibao, where he quickly established himself as a key player and led the team to the Chinese Super League title in 2004. His performances attracted attention from abroad, and in 2007 he joined Charlton Athletic in the English Championship. He also had a brief loan spell with Celtic in the Scottish Premier League.

He returned to China in 2010, signing with Guangzhou Evergrande (later Guangzhou F.C.). During his time with Guangzhou, Zheng captained the team to unprecedented success, winning eight Chinese Super League titles, two AFC Champions League titles, and a Chinese FA Cup. He was also named the Chinese Footballer of the Year twice.

Zheng Zhi was a long-time member of the Chinese national team, making over 100 appearances and captaining the side on numerous occasions. He represented China at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. His leadership and experience made him a vital asset to the national team.

He transitioned into a coaching role while still playing and eventually retired from professional football. He has held various coaching positions, including a period as caretaker manager of Guangzhou F.C. His legacy extends beyond his playing career, influencing the development of Chinese football.
