Voyage (1993 film)
Voyage is a 1993 television film directed by John Mackenzie and starring Rutger Hauer, Eric Roberts, and Karen Allen. The film is based on the 1921 science fiction novel The Voyage That Shook the World by Emanuel Swedenborg, though liberties are taken with the source material.
The film follows John/Lars (Rutger Hauer), a shipwrecked sailor who finds himself on a mysterious island populated by odd characters and advanced technology. He quickly learns that the island is a sort of penal colony or rehabilitation center run by a benevolent but enigmatic figure known as "The Governor" (Eric Roberts). The residents are attempting to overcome their flaws and escape the "real world." Catherine (Karen Allen), a doctor on the island, helps John navigate the complex social dynamics and philosophical underpinnings of this unusual society.
The plot revolves around John's struggle to understand the island's purpose, his interactions with its inhabitants, and his ultimate decision about whether to stay or return to his former life. The film explores themes of redemption, self-discovery, and the nature of reality. It aired as part of the Showtime anthology series.
