Haidhausen (Munich)

Haidhausen is a district (Stadtteil) of Munich, Germany, located on the eastern bank of the Isar river. It is part of the borough (Stadtbezirk) 5, Au-Haidhausen.

Historically, Haidhausen was a separate village outside the city walls of Munich. It was known as a place for breweries and the working class, sometimes referred to as the "glass shard quarter" (Glasscherbenviertel) due to the large number of breweries and associated discarded glass.

In the 19th century, Haidhausen was incorporated into Munich. Today, it is a vibrant and diverse district, known for its charming streets, independent shops, restaurants, and nightlife. It features a mix of architectural styles, including older, traditional buildings and modern developments.

Key landmarks in Haidhausen include the Hofbräukeller, a large beer garden and brewery; the Wiener Platz, a bustling square with a daily market; and the Gasteig, a cultural center that houses the Munich Philharmonic, the Munich City Library, and a music school.

Haidhausen is well-connected to the rest of Munich via public transportation, including U-Bahn (subway), tram, and bus lines. It is a popular residential area and a destination for tourists and locals alike.
