Lantråd

The lantråd is the head of government in Åland, an autonomous, demilitarized, Swedish-speaking region of Finland. Åland has extensive self-government through its own parliament (Lagting) and government. The lantråd is elected by the Lagting and is responsible for forming and leading the Åland government (Landskapsregering). The position is analogous to that of a prime minister in a parliamentary system.

The responsibilities of the lantråd include:

• Representing Åland's government in dealings with the Finnish government and other international bodies.
• Proposing legislation to the Lagting.
• Overseeing the administration of Åland's government.
• Appointing and dismissing members of the Åland government (commissioners or ministers).
• Generally ensuring the effective functioning of the Åland government.

The lantråd is accountable to the Lagting and can be removed from office by a vote of no confidence. The office is crucial for Åland's self-governance and its relationship with Finland.
