Kadıköy

Kadıköy is a large, cosmopolitan district and municipality located on the Asian side of Istanbul, Turkey. It is situated on the northern coast of the Sea of Marmara, facing the European side of Istanbul across the Bosphorus strait.

Historically, Kadıköy was known as Chalcedon in antiquity. It predates Byzantium (later Constantinople, now Istanbul) and was founded in 685 BC by Greek colonists from Megara. Chalcedon played a significant role in early Christian history, most notably as the location of the Council of Chalcedon in 451 AD.

Today, Kadıköy is a vibrant residential, commercial, and cultural hub. It is known for its bustling markets (especially the Kadıköy Market), its diverse range of shops, restaurants, cafes, and bars, and its active nightlife. The district is also home to various cultural institutions, including theaters, art galleries, and music venues.

Transportation in Kadıköy is well-developed, with ferry connections to various points on the European side, as well as bus, dolmuş (shared taxi), metro, and tram lines providing access to other parts of Istanbul. The Haydarpaşa Train Station, a historic landmark, is located in Kadıköy, although passenger train services have been suspended.

Kadıköy is a popular destination for both tourists and locals, offering a mix of historical sites, modern amenities, and a lively atmosphere. Its diverse population contributes to its unique character and makes it one of the most dynamic districts in Istanbul.
