HMS Thetis (1846)

HMS Thetis was a 36-gun Royal Navy frigate launched in 1846. She was a modified Amazon-class frigate, built of wood and designed for speed and maneuverability. Thetis served in various roles during her commission, including anti-slavery patrols off the coast of Africa and deployments in the Pacific.

Her principal dimensions were: length overall 150 ft (45.7 m), beam 38 ft (11.6 m), and draught 13 ft (4.0 m). She displaced approximately 1,250 tons. Her armament consisted primarily of 32-pounder guns, with a complement of around 260 officers and men.

Notable deployments included service in the East Indies and involvement in operations against pirates in the Malay Archipelago. She was also used for surveying work and carrying dispatches.

Thetis was eventually paid off and broken up in 1882, marking the end of her service in the Royal Navy. The ship is remembered as a typical example of a mid-19th century sailing frigate, combining firepower with speed for a variety of naval tasks.
