Larry Sanders (politician)
Larry Sanders (1934-2024) was a British academic, health policy expert, and politician. He was the older brother of U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders.
Born in Brooklyn, New York, Sanders moved to the United Kingdom in 1969, becoming a social worker before entering academia. He became a lecturer at Oxford Brookes University, specializing in health policy and social administration. His work focused on inequalities in health, particularly within the British National Health Service (NHS).
Sanders entered politics as a candidate for the Green Party of England and Wales. He ran for Parliament on multiple occasions, including in the 1997 general election for the Oxford West and Abingdon constituency and in subsequent elections. While he did not win a seat, he used his campaigns to advocate for environmental protection, social justice, and reform of the NHS. He also served as a Green Party councillor on Oxfordshire County Council.
Sanders played a significant role in promoting his brother Bernie Sanders' political career in the United Kingdom, speaking at rallies and organizing support for his presidential campaigns. He was a visible figure during Bernie Sanders' 2016 and 2020 presidential runs, offering commentary and insight on his brother's policy positions to British media.
Larry Sanders passed away in April 2024.
