Tikka (food)

Tikka refers to pieces of meat or vegetables marinated in a spiced yogurt mixture and baked using skewers in a tandoor oven, or roasted/grilled over charcoal or a similar heat source. It is a popular dish originating from the Indian subcontinent.

The term "tikka" simply means "pieces" or "bits" in Urdu and Punjabi, referring to the bite-sized portions of the marinated food. While various meats can be used, chicken tikka is particularly common.

The marinade typically includes yogurt along with a blend of spices such as garam masala, ginger, garlic, chili powder, and other ingredients that contribute to the dish's distinctive flavor profile. The marinating process tenderizes the meat and allows it to absorb the flavors of the spices.

Tikka is often served as an appetizer or starter. It is also the base for other popular dishes such as chicken tikka masala, where the cooked tikka is added to a creamy tomato-based sauce. Vegetarian versions of tikka are also common, featuring paneer (Indian cheese), vegetables like cauliflower, peppers, and onions, or soy-based alternatives.
