FN SCAR

The FN SCAR (Special Operations Forces Combat Assault Rifle) is a family of gas-operated, selective-fire rifles designed and manufactured by FN Herstal (Fabrique Nationale de Herstal) in Belgium. Developed for the United States Special Operations Command (US SOCOM), the SCAR family is based on modular design principles allowing for configuration to fulfill various roles on the battlefield.

The SCAR family primarily consists of two main versions: the SCAR-L (Light) and the SCAR-H (Heavy). The SCAR-L is chambered in 5.56x45mm NATO cartridge, a common intermediate rifle cartridge used extensively by NATO forces. The SCAR-H is chambered in the more powerful 7.62x51mm NATO cartridge. Both variants are designed with ambidextrous controls, including the magazine release, bolt catch, and safety selector, catering to both left- and right-handed users.

Key features of the FN SCAR include its modularity, allowing for easy reconfiguration with different barrel lengths, stocks, and accessories. This adaptability makes it suitable for a wide range of operational requirements, from close-quarters combat to designated marksman roles. The rifle's upper receiver is typically made of aluminum, while the lower receiver is often made of polymer, contributing to a relatively lightweight design. The gas operating system is designed to reduce recoil and improve reliability.

While initially intended for US SOCOM, the FN SCAR has seen adoption by military and law enforcement agencies around the world. Its reliability, modularity, and ergonomic design have made it a popular choice among professional users. Several variants and modifications of the SCAR have also been developed over time to meet specific user requirements.
