Vijayaba Kollaya (film)
Vijayaba Kollaya (Sinhala: විජයබා කොල්ලය) is a 1956 historical drama film directed by Sirisena Wimalaweera. It is considered a landmark film in Sinhala cinema due to its scale and its depiction of a significant event in Sri Lankan history.
The film is based on the historical novel Vijayaba Kollaya by W. A. Silva, which tells the story of the "Sack of Vijayabahu" or "Plunder of Vijayabahu" (Kollaya translates to "plunder" or "sack" in Sinhala). It dramatizes the political intrigue and violence surrounding King Vijayabahu I's reign in the 11th century, particularly the Chola invasions and internal power struggles.
The plot revolves around King Vijayabahu's efforts to unite the country and expel the Chola invaders who had occupied parts of Sri Lanka for several decades. The film portrays the conspiracies and betrayals within the royal court, the battles fought against the Cholas, and the ultimate victory of Vijayabahu in establishing a unified kingdom.
